» SECTION 8 » Residents / Applicants

THE SECTION 8 WAITLIST IS CURRENTLY CLOSED AND IS NOT ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS AT THIS TIME.

The demand for low-income housing in San Francisco far exceeds available units. The need is so great that a waiting list of interested applicants has been established. Thus, an interested family cannot just call or walk into the SFHA and request Section 8 assistance. Instead, only during an open enrollment period will the SFHA take applications for the Section 8 Program. During the application period, a family must pick up and complete the application where available and provide information on family composition and family income. Once the application is complete, the family is contacted when they reach the top of the waiting list and given a date to participate in a personal eligibility interview. During this interview, the family must provide documents to support family size and family income. It is during this interview that the family is determined eligible for the Program.

Your rank on the Section 8 Wait List tells you what position you have on the list compared to all the other applicants on the list. Preferences are priority categories that have been developed by the San Francisco Housing Authority (SFHA) to ensure that the most needy are housed first. There are Local Preferences and Secondary Preferences. Local Preferences include Paying more than 50% of your income for rent; Living in Substandard Housing; or Involuntarily Displaced by Federal or local government action. Secondary Preferences are Working or Living in San Francisco, Veteran of the U.S. Military, and Participating in Welfare to Work Programs. It is difficult to predict how long your wait will be or when you will be called in for final Eligibility Determination. Applicants are placed on the wait list in time and date order, then by local preference, and then finally by secondary preference. We encourage applicants to update their preferences as they change. The order of the wait list changes when participants prefences change, therefore, the rank on the waitlist may go either up or down reflecting the participants preference changes.

The Section 8 Program issues Vouchers based on the availability of funding. Currently, the program is full and does not anticipate any significant activity in the coming years.
