** PRESS RELEASE** PUBLIC HOUSING RESIDENTS TAKE A BITE OUT OF CLEANING San Francisco, CA – More than 150 residents and volunteers rolled up their sleeves and got dirty today for the first ever Team-Up to Clean-Up event. The event is a collective effort of residents, private companies, and city agencies to clean Potrero Hill Terrace & Annex Public Housing. Volunteers of all ages came out to paint over graffiti, pickup litter, weed and landscape, and clear out vacant units. Team-Up to Clean-up is an event that looks to engage residents and the community toward improving the health and safety of their living environment. Trends show that graffiti, litter, and other forms of blight can attract illegal activities.
"These types of activities really help to bring the community together. The benefits are exponential and wide-ranging. Neighbors get to know each other of course. But there are also the benefits that come from having a clean and beautiful place to call home and community. This is how you build community pride," adds Supervisor Sophie Maxwell. Potrero Hill Terrace & Annex is one of the largest developments owned and operated by the San Francisco Housing Authority. It has 605 units that accommodate more than 1,200 low-income individuals and families. "Team-Up to Clean-Up is an opportunity for me to meet the residents and hear how I can make improvements to the development," explains Henry Alvarez III, Executive Director of the San Francisco Housing Authority. "I look forward to hosting many more of these in the community throughout the City." Residents are encouraged to call the City's customer service line at 3-1-1 to report graffiti, litter, and other forms of blight. Team-Up to Clean-Up is a series of events slated for the public housing developments throughout the City. The event is a result of the Housing Authority Transition Team, led by City Administrator Ed Lee, which includes a host of city agencies working in collaboration to make improvements to the agency. The initiatives include providing economic opportunities, implementing green measures, cleaning and turning around vacant units for lease. ###
